Name: Zhan Yu Wen. DoB: October 7th. Age: Twelve. City of Residence: Beijing, China. Alignment: Neutral. Family: Father, mother, older brother (Shou Ren), older sister (Mei Ling). Languages: Chinese, English. |
Yu Wen's powers involve being able to inflict the pain from any physical wounds on his body onto others, as long as he can still feel it himself. He has trouble controlling this ability, tending to unconsciously project it onto anyone else in the same room in an automatic (and futile) attempt to get rid of it. The intensity of the pain the person on the receiving end feels generally depends on the intensity Yu Wen can feel, but if the other person happens to have a much higher pain tolerance, that renders Yu Wen's ability largely ineffective against that person. |
Yu Wen was born on October 7th, 1987, eight years after the birth of his older sister, Mei Ling. His parents hadn't been planning to have a third child, least of all at their age, so Yu Wen's arrival was rather unexpected and not exactly a pleasant surprise. However, since their first son, Shou Ren, was already an adult and no longer dependent on them by this stage, another child was less of a problem than it could have been otherwise. The initial dismay passed quickly and Yu Wen's parents, as well as his older brother, developed the habit of spoiling the youngest member of the Zhan family, frequently letting him get away with far too many things and treating him like he was perfectly sweet and adorable even when he acted like a demanding brat. Yu Wen's powers made themselves known in his early childhood. Running around and playing usually led to ending up with scrapes and bruises of some sort, and Yu Wen had a rather low tolerance for pain, so even tiny injuries managed to set him off crying, as well as inadvertently projecting the magnitude of the pain he thought he could feel onto people within a few steps of him. He wasn't aware of the latter until his brother noticed. Thanks to Shou Ren, Yu Wen gradually learned to control his 'ability' a little better – unfortunately, in moments of pettiness (of which Yu Wen has many), he has deliberately tried to get back at 'people annoying him' by convincing himself that a stubbed toe or a bruised knee hurt much more than they really did and attempting to send that perceived pain towards those people. At the moment, Yu Wen is in the sixth grade. He isn't really aware of anything to do with the end of the world and sees his 'powers' as something annoying and lame and considers his brother's abilities to be just as lame, if not more so. |
Most of the time, Yu Wen doesn't bother faking good manners, unless he really has to in order to avoid ruining his chances of getting something he wants. He often comes across as rude, opinionated, stubborn, self-centred and bigheaded – a spoiled brat. He's also a verbal bully to some other children his age. All that is a mixture of deliberately acting up to seek attention, as well as ingrained behaviour that has resulted from an overly lenient upbringing. At this moment in time, Yu Wen seems to be convinced that he really can get away with just about anything. However, he has his 'nice' moments – ones that aren't just faked for the sole purpose of making a good impression every now and then. Part of him knows that he shouldn't be allowed to act the way he does; that he should make an effort to change. Although it may not seem to be the case, he genuinely cares about his family. He doesn't have any real friends – other kids either blatantly dislike him or follow him only out of being too intimidated to do otherwise – but he wishes he could finally make some. |
Yu Wen does have the dubious luck of looking the 'cute little kid' part, even if his personality often contradicts that, but being rather short isn't something he's particularly thrilled about. In fact, he's very sensitive about that, hoping that he'll hit a couple of growth spurts as soon as possible so he can be as tall as his older brother – maybe even taller. He likes standing out, so as soon as he felt that he might have a chance of getting away with it, he convinced his parents to let him get his hair bleached and dyed to light brown instead of black (no fun in looking like most other people, and besides, his brother dyed his hair, right?). Technically this is against the school rules, and he has gotten in trouble for it, but he was eventually let off the hook because it looked natural enough and constant punishments for something like that became a hassle. Yu Wen can't weasel out of having to wear the same school uniform as 'everyone else' most of the time, though. PB – Kurosaki Hisoka (Yami no Matsuei). |
